Some Common Mistakes in Print Designs and How to Avoid Them

A subset of graphic design, designing for print (or simply print design) involves creating a design that does not only look perfect on the screen but also comes out just as perfect in print. Achieving this requires an in-depth knowledge of things like color profiles, image resolution, image sizing and aspect ratio. But sometimes, even experts make mistakes. Here are some common digital printing mistakes and how to avoid them. Creating a design in RGB instead of CMYK RGB (red, green, blue) is an additive color scheme that uses light to mix pigments. The more light you add to an image, the brighter the color becomes. The problem with RGB is that it looks great on the screen, but comes out in inaccurate colors in print. CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and key) is a subtractive color scheme that uses a mix of inks to create different colors. The more ink you mix, the darker the color becomes. CMYK is perfect for printing. But beginners are often unaware of the difference and create their design in RGB format. If your colors do not come out as good in print as on the screen, then the simple solution is to switch to CMYK. Using Photoshop’s default CMYK value for black One thing you may not be aware of is that Photoshop’s default black consumes a lot of ink. Look at its CMYK value and you will see it as 75,68,67,90. This means 75% cyan, 68% magenta, 67% yellow and 90% black, which adds up to a 300 percent total coverage. Printing with Photoshop’s default black is a huge waste of ink. Instead of using the CMYK default value, set it manually. A popular value for rich black is 50,40,40,100. Be careful not to set it to 0,0,0,100 as it will appear more dark grey than black when printing. Setting CMYK color values too high In the CMYK color scheme, every other color is a mix of the four primary colors: cyan, magenta, yellow and key (black). Thus, the higher the CMYK values, the richer the colors will be. However, setting the values too high can spoil an image because of the way colored inks are mixed and also because of the way printing surfaces absorb ink. An image with a coverage of more than 280% (for example 89,78,86,70) may come out as an ugly muddy color in print, although it may look great on the screen. So, make sure that you do not set the CMYK values to high. Setting the image resolution for the screen What you see on the screen is usually not what you will get in print. But beginners often forget this and set the resolution for...

How to Create Punchy Apparel Catalogues

Having a great product is one thing. Attracting the right eyes is another. In fact, many products ultimately fail not because they have no quality but because potential customers just never got word on them. One way to get the word out is with stunning product catalogues and this weighs in heavily if you deal in apparel. Visuals are of paramount importance and these require great camera work, great catalogue design, and great printing production. Here’s how you can create punchy apparel catalogues for your fashion line. Pick the perfect garment Apart from choosing the best designs to feature, you have to ensure that the apparel you are going to shoot is in good form. With all the transportation and storage, clothes often get wrinkles and creases that make them less appealing on the other side of the camera. It is crucial for you to take photos of the clothes in crisp condition as a poorly taken product image will send your customers closing that catalogue without thinking twice. Sure, you could use Photoshop, but even with that, you risk losing image quality. Ultimately, you waste huge amounts of money printing poorly done images. Set up your studio With the garments carefully chosen and setup, you will need the right environment to capture the images in. The word ‘studio’ might sound intimidating to a small apparel company, but relax – any room can be turned into a makeshift studio. All you need are a few basics like a tripod, a camera, and good lighting. Backdrop The backdrop has to be plain and of the right colour. White and light grey work the best as this means you would not have any intrusive or distracting colours. You can use seamless rolls of white paper that you can easily get from most photography suppliers. If your pocket allows, try to hang the paper on a movable stand for easy repositioning. You could also make do with just a wall or by hanging a piece of cloth as a backdrop. Lighting Any photographer will tell you that natural light is the best. If your room has a big window then you are in a very good position for photo taking. The problem is that you have very little control on how and when natural light shines. This is why you would do well investing in a few bucks on an artificial lighting kit. Mannequin or model? Should you use a mannequin or a model? This is really a question of which one would be easier to access. Models can be expensive to hire in Singapore but they can breathe more life into your apparel pictures more than a mannequin can. If you cannot...

How Does Digital Printing Work

Digital printing and its techniques are widespread now and are a very common mode of printing documents. It is quickly catching up with the traditional printing methods like lithographic printing. Digital printing is possible because of the advent of printers and personal computers and a big number of readily available software such as desktop publishing. That is why most households and businesses have an easy access to digital printing. Here are some important facts about digital printers and how they work: Color process The use of digital printing is increasing day by day and is responsible for creating clear, sharp images and text which is necessary for professional quality productions of necessary documents. The four colour process is used in digital printing for achieving the clarity in its images. To develop a multicolour and crisp document, this methodology is used where four colour separations become applicable which is known as CMYK process (cyan, magenta, yellow and black often referred to as the process). As a series of tiny dots, these colours are nicely printed onto the paper which makes up the blocks of tint. The combinations of the colours are digitally processed and millions of colour constructions are possible with the tones and shades, allowing the actual pictures to be captured by the digital printer. With the CMYK capabilities, the printers that are used in the digital imaging process are crucial to replicate the colour intensity and generate the required items. Quality and versatility In terms of quality, there are some unfavourable and unmatched comparisons to lithographic printing when the digital printing was just started. However, the recent development of digital printing ensures a very high quality that is comparable to any other printing methods. Sometimes the digital printers exceed the competitors in versatility and quality. It is possible to construct more complex images and uses of images are becoming more and more common in digital printing. For creating bespoke business information, a digital printer can be absolutely handy. The images are saved into a digital file when it is created and it converts them into a digital format. The digitization process makes sure that the edges (printed) of an image are sharp and clear when the file is forwarded for reproduction to the printer. Printer types The digital printers used for printing can either be a laserjet printer or inkjet variety. For digital printing, different types of printers are essential and they should be chosen carefully. For instance, the laserjet printers usually quicker than inkjet printers, but the inkjet printers are relatively cheaper than laserjet. Digital printing is very efficient and effective for a wide range of business or personal documents and for bulk printing, this is also...

Here are the reasons digital printing has become so popular: It is economical Compared to offset printing, digital printing is relatively inexpensive. You do not need to invest in expensive equipment to fulfill your printing needs. All you need are a personal computer (or laptop), a digital printer (inkjet or laser), a word processor or page maker program, and paper. It is practical In majority of cases, organizations need to print documents at a very short notice and in small quantities only. Digital printers make this possible. You can print your documents quickly and easily at any time you need them – even on holidays if there is an emergency. This is not possible with offset printing. Also, since digital printers are usually connected to the office network (such as a LAN), everyone can access them. These make digital printing very practical. It is flexible You can hook up all kinds of digital devices (mobile phones, tablets, iPads, digital cameras and scanners) to your computer, download the files and print them. You can connect some devices directly to the printer and print from it as well. You can also print directly from the internet. This ability to connect to other digital devices and to the internet gives you unlimited flexibility. At any given time, you can quickly and effortlessly print any image and document stored on any digital media. It is scalable Technology changes all the time. What used to be considered state-of-the-art a few years ago is outdated today; what is considered cutting-edge today will probably be obsolete in few years. But computer systems (that include digital printers and other accessories) can be easily and inexpensively upgraded. Most organizations upgrade their computer systems every five or ten years to keep up with the changing technologies. This scalability allows you to take advantage of the latest technologies from the comfort of your home or office. No need to be an expert You do not need training to operate a digital printer. Anyone can learn to print within a few minutes because they have very few control...
